There’s something about the ocean that makes you feel like you’re not alone… even in the quiet.
Not in a loud or overwhelming way.But in a calm, grounding, almost unspoken connection.
That’s exactly what The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery helped me understand on a deeper level.
🐙 More Than Just a Book About the Ocean
At first glance, you might think this is just a book about marine life.
But it’s not.
It’s about:
Connection
Awareness
Curiosity
And what happens when we slow down enough to actually notice the world around us
Including the parts of it we don’t always think about.
🌊 The Kind of Connection We Forget About
One of the most powerful takeaways for me was realizing:
👉 We’re not as separate from nature as we think we are.
The way octopuses interact, learn, and even recognize people…
It makes you pause.
It makes you question:
How often are we rushing through life without really seeing anything?
How much are we missing because we’re always in a hurry?
✈️ What This Has to Do With Travel
This is where it hit me.
Travel gives us the opportunity to:
Slow down
Step outside of routine
Experience something unfamiliar
But if we’re not intentional…
We can still rush through it.
Still distracted.Still disconnected.
💙 Travel That Actually Feels Different
Not every trip needs to be:
Packed with activities
Fully scheduled
Constantly moving
Some of the most powerful trips are the ones where you:
Sit longer
Walk slower
Notice more
Breathe deeper
Where you don’t just visit a place…
You actually experience it.
🎧 Listen Instead of Read
Just like the other books in this series, The Soul of an Octopus is incredible on audio.
There’s something about hearing these stories that makes you feel like you’re right there.
It slows you down in the best way.
(I’ll be linking my recommended audiobook version so you can listen wherever you are.)
🌴 A Different Kind of Travel Experience
After reading this, it changed the way I look at certain trips.
It’s not just about:✔ Resorts✔ Excursions✔ Checklists
It’s about moments like:
Seeing marine life up close
Experiencing nature without distraction
Letting yourself just be there
Because sometimes…
That’s where the real magic happens.
